Noises and Hawk Jones
"NOISES" was a movie about a murder in the apartment upstairs that is overheard by Anthony (played by Larry Marcheschi). He decides to investigate and discovers that a man (played by Steve Martens) has murdered a baby and may kill the mother (played by Annette Marie Wilson).

This came about after I was asked to be the judge at the first Quad Cities film festival in 1985.
It was there I met Rik (Richard) Lowry who had entered a film in the festival that he made which I gave the Best Film award to.  Afterwards we decided to make a film together, since I had the camera, my role would be as producer/assistant director and his would be as writer/directer.
It was called "Noises." This was filmed in the Quad Cities. The Exterior and upstairs "murder apartment" was located in Rock Island and the downstairs apartment was one from Moline, Illinois. Then some additional filming took place in Bettendorf, Iowa and some warehouse space inside of a printing company in downtown Moline.

While Noises was a horror film, "HAWK JONES" is a cops and robbers movie where the entire cast is made up of children. Kids are playing adult roles in this comedy spoof.
It was the first feature film to be made in the Quad Cities.

Be sure to scroll down to see some exclusive behind the scenes videos from Hawk Jones as well as some news clips.

The movie was made by Quad Kiddie Productions and was produced and directed by Richard Lowry, Screenplay by Richard and Tor Lowry, and Associate Producer / Associate Director Jeff Carney.  It starred Valiant DuHart, Charmella Roark, Tyler Vargas, and Casey DePaepe.

I had just graduated from high school and finished working with Rik (Richard Lowry) on the film called Noises when he asked me to join him on Hawk Jones.  Most people don't realize before they see it that there is literally no adults in the movie. All of the actors are children which were cast locally.  There is saying in Hollywood to never work with kids or animals but the kids were great to work with as were the parents. By the time Hawk Jones was finished we were all experts working with kids on a movie. I enjoyed working with all the kids (nearly 100).

It was fun but the only problem was you could only shoot with the kids for a certain length of time each day due to child labor laws. Different kids/scenes were scheduled at different times throughout the day so something could always be filmed as one group left another would show up. It was filmed all over the Quad Cities including scenes at the John Deere Wyman house, East Moline police station, and upstairs in the old Plantation which served as the bad guys estate in the movie (including a fight scene in their nightclub).

Problems were solved creatively - while you can't have the kids actually driving cars in the movie I suggested  a way to simulate it by shooting driving footage (scenery going by) with my video camera and then playing it back on a large screen tv (poor man's blue screen process) just outside the car window. So the car never moved but the kids sat in the car acting like they were driving and saying their lines as we played the footage  in the background on the tv of the scenery moving by as we shook the car by hand for bumps in the road.

In fact my car was used as the bounty hunter's car in the movie due to it's exotic looks. Someone posted pictures of scenes involving my car at http://www.bricklins.net/ under Photo Albums / Movies and Television / Hawk Jones.

Here are four exclusive behind the scenes videos that I had in my personal collection which hasn't been seen before.  I had several hours of footage from location scouting to filming to rehearsals to recording studio and editing footage that I cut down to four shorter segments which you can view below. Some of the footage I took and other footage was shot for my collection by my friend Tim Edmonds since I'm in a lot of the footage working during the filming of Hawk Jones.
